I found a straight shifter knob at Canadian Tire for $30 APC and want to buy it but is it easy enough to install into my 98 auto sl1? Its the straight one with push button on top.

yuup...i did it to my 98 sl1...you gotta remove the safety pin on the front of the shift knob just below the neck .. once you remove that its pretty easy to take off hte stock knob .. the spring might fly out so be careful ! ..

reinstalling the new APC knob shouldn't be hard at all....fairly easy when I did it in my 98 sl1 ..

While a few may very well pop off easy, many of us here have punched ourselves in the face removing shift knobs, from having to exert so much force to get it off lol

Be careful of that aswell.

BTW morris, I have the same knob, I hope you have better luck getting it to stay on, mine kept slipping off no matter how tight I made the allen screws, now it's in my center console lol

If your having problems with it staying in place, simply drill a small hole in the shifter itself, and install a slightly longer allan screw.

Morris, feel around the front of the knob, near the bottom of it. You should feel a slot, inside the slot is a retainer clip. You need to stick a flathead in there and pry out the retainer, then you can pull up on the knob to get it off. Like I said before, make sure you face away from it lol.

Well that was easy, took a small screwdriver and got the pin out and just slid slowly off and changed it in 5 minutes.
