auto, not sure, I just throw them out........

5spd yes the SOHC tranny will work on the DOHC (my g/f's car has this right now)

If you have cruise control, it won't work while you have the wrong transmission matched to the wrong engine.

from what ive been reading (im doing this exact swap) the sohc (mp2 5 speed) trans was designed for fuel economy, while the dohc (mp3 5 speed) trans was designed with acceleration in mind

well your Cardomain profile says your located in California, most of this board is based in Ontario, so the places we can get motors will not help you exactly ;)

depending on what your willnig to spend you can check out your local craigslist, see whats on there, Local Junk yards, or if you want a brand new engine there's always the dealer.. but i woudlnt suggest that route

if you are looking for a brand new engine tho, i would check out getsaturnparts.com i havent seen any cheaper prices from dealers than them

they are a dealer iirc

their DOHC long block for an 00-02 is $2,106.01
includes
Block, Cylinder Head, Rods & Pistons, Crankshaft, Bearings & Rear Seal.

for 1999 is the same price (but different part number by the looks of it)

98 there is no listing

96-97 is $2,172.64

But i beleive you have a third gen right? the first choice 00-02 is what your after... Don't forget the ECU, or at least a re-flash of yours from the dealer

Kevin, the cruise control will work, Krista's car is a DOHC engine and computer, mounted to a MP2 tranny, Cruise works fine on her car.

lol, well it won't work on a 96/97 with OBD2, as both Rene and I had the same issue, when the wrong transmission was in the car, cruise wouldn't work, as soon as the right one was put in, started working again.

In Rene's case a SOHC engine with MP3 had the problem, and in my case, DOHC engine with MP2.
