Before starting, red part and reverse part masked:

The Candy Apple red used to tint:

After 3 coats of red, I put one last HEAVY coat of red on after this:

After 1 LIGHT coat of niteshadez:

After 4 coats of clear:

A bit brighter picture:

All in all, it's nice, it evens out the taillight so that it's all red, plus they were faded before and now they're shiny.
Also, I kept the niteshadez light so that the tails would be brighter/easier to see. Draws less cop attention too.

What I think might look really good is to tint the tails as heavy as my wagon's tails were, and then paint the plastic "bar" that goes on the trunklid horizontally between the tails black, so it would look like the tails and the bar are one long black piece.... not sure how that would look on the car though.

Anyhow for about $30 in paint, I think it made a huge improvement to the look of the car :)

nice work! Looks awesome, I want to do this with my SL1, now that you've posted this I may try and do it now.

How long does it take to do?

Thanks guys!

smurf, it does take a good bit of time if you really want to do it properly.
if you want to get it done really fast (IE: 5 hours), you wont do as good of a job...

Figure on:
- 15 minutes to sand the lens initially and mask off the reverse/brake portions
- 30 minutes to put on the 3-4 coats of red on the amber section
- 2 hours to let the red dry
- 15 minutes to unmask the brake section (and possibly your reverse section if you want to darken it too) and to put on your coat(s) of niteshadez
- 1 hour to let that dry
- 10 minutes to spray a couple coats of clear
- at least an hour to let the clear dry so that it doesn't smudge/run

This isn't counting any wet sanding, which I didn't do any of for these tails. I knew I wouldn't have a professional clearcoat put on so it woulnd't matter that much.

The more time you give the paints to dry in a warm environment (I painted in my basement....) the better. Paints dont dry/cure quickly in the cold temperatures outside at all. Even spraying them outside causes small amounts of dew to build up on the lens as you bring it outside from the warm inside.

Looks okay, but I doubt a cop wouldve bothered you.. Its illegal in OH to tint your lights unless, you have fog lights up front not tinted, or a third brake light not tinted. Now Ive driven around for about 2yrs now with my dark tinted tails and shaved third brake light, Not one ticket and I never slow down for cops.
